Abstract

This study is a survey to provide basic data for the predischarge rehabilitation education of patients with total hip replacement by researching thier dwelling environment and activities of daily living after discharge. The subjects were forty patients living in Pusan, Korea, who had been performed total hip replacement surgery from June 1, 1992 to May 30, 1993 at an University Hospital. Data were evaluated by questionaires concerning subjects¢¥ dwelling environment and sevenday activities of daily living after discharge. Questionaire used in this studty was modifided based on activities of daily living by Jin Woo Chung and Harris¢¥ Hip Function Scale.
There were more cases with inappropriate dwelling environment, such as washstand, bathtub, seat toilet, chair, table, bed and stair.
Activities of daily living in washing face, bathing, toileting, dressing, transferring, social and occupational activities were evaluated.
As a result of this survey, informations about temporary washstands and seat toilets were obtained. Using washstands and seat toilets will reduce excessive flexion and weight bearing resulting in redislocation or failure of total hip replacement. we concluded that educating the total hip replacement surgery patients with inappropriate dwelling environment before dischage will be very useful in successful home replacement wihtout complication.
